  • What are rodents?

    Rodents are a diverse group of mammals known for their continuously growing incisors, which they use to gnaw on various materials. This category includes familiar species such as mice, rats, squirrels, and hamsters, among others, encompassing a wide range of habitats across the globe. Characterized by their adaptability and rapid reproduction rates, rodents play significant roles in ecosystems but can also pose challenges when they come into conflict with human activities.

    Deer mice are small sized, white at the belly and feet while brownish at the top. Most commonly referred to as the deer mouse, although that name is common to most species of Peromyscus,  and is often referred to as the North American Deer Mouse. This species of rodent is widespread across the continent, with the major exception being the southeastern parts of the United States and the far northern sections of the continent.

    Roof rats are either brown or black in color and smaller in size when compared to Norway rats. Their tails are longer than their body. The Roof rat , also known as the ship rat, black rat, house rat, is a common long-tailed rodent of the genus Rattus family of rats.

    House mice are light grey in color and they measure between 5 to 7 inches running from the nose to the tail. The house mouse is a small mammal of the order Rodentia, having a pointed snout, small rounded ears, and a long naked or almost hairless tail. It is one of the most numerous species of the United States.

    Norway rats, measure 13 to 17 inches from the nose to the tip of the tail and they are grayish-brownish in color. The Norway Rat, also referred to as common rat, street rat, sewer rat, Hanover rat, Norway rat, brown rat, Norwegian rat, or wharf rat (Rattus norvegicus) is one of the best known and most common rats.

    Where are rodents found?

    Rats are among the most ubiquitous and adaptable creatures on the planet, thriving in a wide array of environments, from rural to urban settings. Their presence is widespread, with two of the most common species being the Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) and the roof rat (Rattus rattus). Each species has its preferred habitats but together, they cover a broad spectrum of environments.

    Urban Areas: In cities and towns, rats are often found in sewers, buildings, subways, and any areas where human refuse provides a steady food supply. They are skilled climbers and burrowers, making their nests in walls, attics, basements, and under concrete slabs. The abundance of food waste in urban areas supports large populations, leading to significant infestations.

    Rural and Suburban Areas: In these settings, rats may inhabit barns, granaries, livestock buildings, and even dense vegetation. They are attracted to any place that offers shelter and a food source, including farm fields and gardens, where they can cause considerable damage to crops.

    Natural Habitats: While often associated with human dwellings, rats also occupy natural habitats such as forests, grasslands, and riverbanks. The Norway rat, for instance, prefers lower elevations and is commonly found near water sources like rivers and lakes, where it can burrow into the soft soil. Roof rats, on the other hand, tend to favor warmer climates and are excellent climbers, often residing in trees, shrubs, and dense vegetation.

    Global Distribution:Rats have a global distribution, largely facilitated by human travel and trade. They are found on every continent except Antarctica, showcasing their ability to adapt and survive in diverse climatic conditions. Islands and remote locations previously free of rats have experienced ecological disruptions upon their introduction, highlighting their significant impact on native wildlife and ecosystems.

    The adaptability and opportunistic nature of rats make them one of the most successful mammalian species. Their presence in nearly every human-inhabited area of the world underscores the ongoing challenge of managing rat populations and mitigating their impact on human health, food supplies, and the environment.

    Why should I be concerned about rodents?

    Rodents difficult to control pose as danger to man as they can transmit diseases and contaminate food in the process. Mice are able to contaminate food 10 times the quantity they consume. Results gotten from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have proven rodents are responsible for 406 cases of Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome among other disease in which its first occurrence was in 1993. Thirty-six percent of the infected individuals all lost their life as a result. Lymphocytic Chorimeningitis virus as well as other diseases are known to be transmitted by fleas attached to rodents. Symptoms of LCMV includes fever, chills, headaches, meningitis and muscle aches. Meningitis has a more severe effect on individuals with weak immune system but a less critical effect on able-bodied people. An infected pregnant woman might suffer severe complications.
